There are many guitar teachers who will teach you songs or guitar riffs that you want to play. What does that teach you? It teaches you a few cool riffs and is okay for a quick fix but doesn't help you to learn guitar in the long term.
Mike's approach is to teach you music. This means:
- you will be able to understand how music is made up. Understanding which notes work with which chords and even how to make your own guitar chords means you could write your own music or improvise;;
- you will understand how to use your fingers and arms in the most efficient way possible. Develop dexterity, speed and stamina while avoiding repetitive strain injuries, unlocking your potential as quickly as possible while developing habits that will allow you to play guitar for a lifetime;
- if you're learning acoustic or Classical Guitar you will learn how to get the most out of your instrument to make a richer, more powerful sound. Mike has studied how acoustic guitars are designed to work;
- you will learn how to use your guitar practice time more effectively to maximise your improvements in minimum time. The phrase 'practice makes perfect' is wrong. You could practise for hours and get worse if you don't know how to practise correctly. Remember:
As Mike understands that not everyone learns guitar at the same speed he only teaches one-to-one. He is a patient teacher who has experienced the problems and frustrations of learning an instrument. Because not everyone experiences the same difficulties he sometimes devises exercises unique to each student to tackle a specific need. Some of these exerises can be done without a guitar, meaning you can make progress while waiting for the kettle to boil, taking a walk, waiting for the adverts to end or even when stuck in traffic.
Mike M.Mus., BA(Hons) has been teaching guitar since 1996, working with every age from 5yrs to 70yrs privately and in secondary schools as well as at Christ Church University, Canterbury. For several years he taught guitar in a special needs school and a Grammar School but now teaches exclusively in his home in West Canterbury.
He is currently researching the ergonomics and physiology of playing guitar for his PhD at the University of Kent. This is a subject he first started researching for his degree thesis in 2000. This information has allowed him to develop a more efficient, injury-free technique, which he passes on to his guitar students.
In 2002, during his Master's Degree, he was awarded the Larissa Lovelock Scholarship in recognition of his performance skills.
Originally Mike played lead guitar in heavy metal bands and also has experience playing blues and jazz. After trying to work with scores of undedicated musicians he began experimenting with solo playing which lead to studying Classical guitar at degree and Master's degree level so is equally at home teaching all common guitar styles.
